The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital received a big boost when the Master of Southampton New Temple Lodge, Roger Curtis, presented a cheque for £2,562.30, the proceeds of his Ladies Night, to the Hospital’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Roger’s fund raising Dinner and Dance was held at the Kings Court Masonic Centre, Chandler’s Ford, in March this year with 74 masons, partners, family, and friends attending. The Unit is dear to Roger and his wife, as Jillie’s brother in law, Philip Ridd, was treated at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Roger explained, “He was looked after so well following his 3rd heart operation, but sadly he did not recover from and passed away in February 2022. “Several of the Ladies Night guests, or their family members have been looked after at the Unit and wish me to convey their personal admiration for the work undertaken by CICU” “The attendees are still talking about the event and the good time we all had. Roger added, “On behalf of the members of the Lodge and Jillie, we are very pleased to support the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.” Southampton’s CICU looks after people who are seriously ill with heart problems, usually after or immediately before having open heart surgery.
It is one of only a handful of dedicated Cardiac units in the country and has excellent patient outcomes for all types of heart surgery. The unit is purpose-built with 15 beds, and has been specially designed for intensive care patients. As a centre of excellence, they treat patients from the Wessex region and beyond averaging 1400 patients per year.
